Get in touch with your inner tramp...I'll recommend two books to get you started.
The first is Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell. As you might guess from the title, the book is a diary of sorts from Orwell's time stuck in the slums and gutters of these cities. In the beginning he explains tramp-dom:
"Poverty frees people from ordinary standards of behaviour, just as money frees people from work...When you are approaching poverty, you make one discovery that outweighs some of the others. You discover boredom and mean complications and the beginnings of hunger, but you also discover the great redeeming feature of poverty: the fact that it annihilates the future..."
Great stuff. Also anyone who has slaved in the kitchen of a dirty restaurant (I've literally worked in 10) will appreciate this book.
The second recommendation is Hopping Freight Trains in America by Duffy LittleJohn (out of print/tough to find). This is a modern day how-to guide on jumping trains. Ordering this book will definitely put you on the Homeland Security watch list.
I suggest reading these books just as a precautionary measure...a contingency plan.
Imagine, for example, that the Dems lose the White House in '08 or that there is another halted-recount. If something shocking/insane/tragic like this happens in '08, I will be hittin' the road for at least 4 years. Seriously. And I'll share a boxcar with any of you who are interested.
